Towell and Toohey Lead Charge in Romping Over Bulldogs

Final Score
Shockers 12
Bulldogs 1

The Shockers started off the night huddled in the bar at le Rinque taking in the Habs vs. Bruins game, gravely getting disappointed that the Canadiens were probably going to go down 3-0 in the series.

The Shockers would soon have something to cheer about.

The game kicked off and a little more than five minutes into it, Steve Diabo, would lace it past goalie, Danny Noel.

Ten seconds later, Steve Towell scores his first of the game and just because he doesn't like to be forgotten, Towell smacked in another about a minute later just to remind the goalie he was still around.

Marc Boucher, more known as The Claw, who strutted into the game with only a dirty threesome of assists was still looking to for his first notch in the bedpost this season. With about 8:15 left in the frame, he found the right elixir of magic to whisp upon the opposing goaltender as he fooled him with a low and direct one-timer. Two minutes later, the Claw, would unleash the dragon of fury once again with a solid blast from the point through an interracial orgy of players in front of the Bulldogs net.

"It feels great to break the ice and get my first goals of the season, even though it doesn't say so on the NABHL site!" commented Boucher.

If the Bulldogs thought they were leaving the first period just down 5-0, guess again, especially when Chris Diabo is around on the power play. Leave it to the kid to missile one passed everyone including the goalie who looked like nothing more than a bump on the log on that shot.

Onto the second period and the scoring kicked off with the Bulldogs catching the Shockers with their pants down. Dre Storelli picked off a clearing pass from Francois Hamelin right in the slot and managed to beat Giancarlo Capaz, who had limited work all night, with a surprising flee-flicker of a shot. But soon later it was business as usual for the Shockers as Jon Sante, who was filling in on center once again brought on the uncoming storm of goals. Donald Toohey carried the torch and lit the lamp twice back to back, then Chris Diabo got one. Big brother, Steve Diabo meshed a pretty one seconds later and then with two seconds left in the period, Chris DiSensi stirred up the pot with a goal of his own.

With the score already 12-1 the game was over before the third period even got to tick a second. The teams decided to play for fun anyways. They swapped goalies, where the Bulldogs goalie played fairly well on the Shockers side and even most Bulldog players were baffled. Toohey tested his abilities as a midget and took out a broken stick no bigger than 2 feet tall to play the rest. Towell tested his skills at broomball as he tried a fancy move out on Capaz.

The Shockers will take a little break before they have to take on the oh-so competitive FW, Wednesday, May 6th @ 7:30pm. FW, who always make short work out of the Shockers will have to buckle up for a new challenge.

Player Profile: Chris Disensi

Chris is one of the three amigos who joined the Shockers this season. A fierce and versatile competitor that helped solidify the foundation for the rebirth of the team. Born in Montreal’s Little Italy in ‘76, he was the 9th DiSensi kid that Leonarda gave birth to. His mother [Leonarda Disensi] spent most of her time taking care of the big family. Between 1955 and 1976 she gave birth to 4 girls and 5 boys. His father [Leandro Disensi] was a successful businessmen, the family owned a prosperous import/export company. The family activity was mostly oriented towards the traditional Italian imports: olive oil, red wine and various other items requested by local grocery stores and restaurants.

At an early age Chris understood that he would eventually be taking over the business with his brothers and sisters. After he got his high school diploma, he dropped out and spent endless hours making the business grow. In his 20’s, he was getting tired of the routine and was looking for new opportunities and avenues. The brothers and sisters decided to open a restaurant; the four sisters put all their efforts to make this a success story. Things were going well; the brothers taking care of the import/export and the sisters made the restaurant one of the most popular joints of the neighborhood.

Everything Chris was touching resulted in a success story, but the success was getting to his head. The expensive clothes, the fancy shoes, the sports cars, running bills and alcohol was making Chris spin out of control. One night at a family reunion, after too many shots of Grappa, his big mouth got him in trouble. An anonymous source said he had been watching the movie Scarface over and over and was suffering from delusions of grandeur… Chris believed he was Tony Montana. It was time for a change, he chugged the bottle of Grappa, stole a truck from the family warehouse and just drove away…

His little roadtrip to nowhere brought him all the way to Las Vegas. He decided he was going to start from scratch and make his way back to the top. Vegas was the place for a big shot like him. The truck had a few cases of olive oil and a Spiderman suit, Chris knew that was worth shit… He started a Spiderman street act with a local Rod Stewart wannabe (you can see Chris’s act here) but it was obvious that he couldn’t compete with Cirque du Soleil. Always thinking, he printed some new labels and the remaining olive oil was transformed into some sensual massage oil which he titled, “The DiSensitizer.”

He provided for every hooker on the strip with this magic oil. He quickly made friends with them and in a matter of weeks he was the biggest pimp of Vegas… Winner, winner, chicken diner! But everything is bigger in Vegas, it was just a question of time before someone else showed up to stole the spotlight. Chris didn’t care too much though; he had made a killing and didn’t have to worry about money anymore. He decided he was going to stay a while in Vegas and then move on…

After throwing away most of his fortune in the slot machines he decided to head back up to hometown Montreal. His good friend Donald “Brown Rocket” Toohey hooked him up with a place in Verdun and Chris just started again with the Spiderman act. Verdump was not ready for that act and neither was Toohey. Toohey told him straight up that one more Spiderman dance move or whistle would force to kick him out on the street. Chris decided to go back and apologize to the family… He’s back on the payroll driving the delivery truck and taking care of his Nona.

Filling Big Brother's Shoes

Final Score
Shockers 7
Decepticons 3

Last night the Shockers took on the Decepticons, which in the past, has always been a good hockey game to watch. Last season, almost every encounter went back and forth and most of the time ended in a shootout. This season, with both teams doing relatively well, it could have gone either way.

Shockers stepped up to the plate with two of their regulars out of the line-up. Steve Diabo, the big baller, shot caller, was out with a groin injury and flu-like symptoms while Gary McDermott was out with lacerations to the face sustained from a friendly game in another league. Jon Sante back in the line-up and was assigned to retain his spot on center. Andrew Stevens was sent to go on wing to replace the ailling Steve Diabo. Chris DiSensi was moved to center replacing Alain Godard who jumped back on D.

On to the game, and the Shockers knew they had to turn their recent slide around. So much so, that fellow defensive dive bomb, Francois Hamelin, proposed a round of beer on him if the Shockers pull off the 'W'. As soon as the word 'beer' left Hamelin's lips, Donald Toohey rushed out on the playing surface with a raging semi, but his anxiousness did not infect the rest of the as the game didn't start off as well as planned. The Decepticons got on the board first when Francois Montanesse beat the down-and-out Giancarlo Capaz and then Charles-Antoine Marcoux netted a softy to make it a 2-0 game. Toohey was losing wood quick but that would soon change.

Chris DiSensi showed that he belonged up front when he buried a Donald Toohey feed to the stick. Godard also picking up his first assist as a defenseman for the Shockers on DiSensi's goal. Three minutes later, Chris Diabo who looked to step up his game and fill his big brother's shoes rifled one passed the goaltender and then just 40 seconds later Andrew Stevens laced one off the post and in to give the Shockers a 3-2 go-ahead.

The second period kicked off with a jump as DiSensi would bang home his second of the game from Stevens and Diabo. Toohey, started to smell the sweet smell of malt and barley! The Shockers were looking comfortable on a two-goal cushion but would be stirred up when Seb Brosseau snuck one past Capaz. Capaz, shaken but not stirred, made a messenger-bag full of saves throughout the period as his team-mates looked almost out of gas. However, just as everyone thought the period was over with 19 seconds, Diabo blasted another one top-shelf past the padded obstacle to give them a two-goal lead again.

The third period opened up with Capaz making more big saves to bail out his boys in black and giving Toohey a harder rock. Shockers woke back up with about 5:00 left in the game when Steve Towell wizzed in a short-handed goal and then a 1:46 left, Diabo completed the hat-trick from a Ben Ducharme feed.

Chris Diabo finished off the night with 3 goals and 2 assists and Francois Hamelin was about $45 in the hole.

"It was like the little brother filling in his big brother's shoes," said Francois Hamelin with a twinkle in his eye.

"I don't need to fill in anyone shoes!" grumbled Chris Diabo.

Next game is Monday, April 20th @ 9:30pm against the struggling Bulldogs. The Bulldogs are dead last in the Full Throttle division going a staggering 0-8 which includes just 18 goals for but 63 against. Last night the Bulldogs were bulldozered by the Huskies 10-1, a game where their leading point getter Aaron Carpman (6G-5A) was a scratch. All in all, should be an easy win for the Shockers brigade.

PLAYER PROFILE: Gary McDermott

In this week's Player Profile spotlight we had to aim the spotlight high up just to catch a glimpse of this giant's babyface. No we weren't trying to call batman but let's just says if the Shockers were the L.A. Lakers, this dude would be their Shaquille O'Neal. Let's find out more about the two-year veteran who holds up the blueline...actually he holds it up well over 6 feet something, this week we'll get to know Gary McDermott.

Gary is the cousin of assistant captain Andrew Stevens, however no one is really sure how they are related to each other as there is a considerable size difference.

" He's been really tall for as long as I've known," commented Stevens.

McDermott's father was a pretty famous guy and you all might remember him when you were going up watching the Friendly Giant on CBC. Gary's father was known for being tall and gentle and scored himself a TV show at CBC and was not much of a hockey player. Actually he wasn't much of a sports person at all. Gary's father was usually left out of activities in school because teachers felt he had an unfair advantage over the other kids.

Regardless, Gary liked having a famous father. He was often on the set of his father's TV show and vowed that one day he would be a successful TV star like his dad.

As Gary grew up, he had the ambitious to get out and try new things that his father never had a chance to do. One, was to player hockey. Unfortunately, Gary was not able to buy equipment at Canadian Tire like every other kid his age, he needed to have equipment especially made for him. Luckily for him, his father being as famous as he was, was able to pull some strings and get him a one of a kind hockey stick made. Green Peace wasn't too happy about the creation of the stick due to the destruction of an entire rain forest but their protest was cut short after Gary threatened to decimate the entire seal population with his bare hands.

Gary's love for hockey exploded but his career never really lifted off the ground.

"I wasn't like the other kids. I didn't want to go to the NHL, I just wanted to play hockey," McDermott explained.

In result of his hockey career not making him any money, Gary started to follow the ways of his father and started to get into acting. Gary got his first gig as the Jolly Green Giant for General Mills and became an over-night success!

Monuments, statues, commercials, action figures, and other memorabilia started hitting the mainstream and Gary was arguably more famous than his father ever was or would be.

Gary, like most famous kids started to spiral out of control. He started hanging out with Macauley Culkin and Drew Barrymore and they were denoted as the Terrible Three. Drugs, sex and rock 'n' roll lead to more constant partying and questionable practices which in turn sent Gary back to hometown, Verdun, Quebec. Gary hated who he had become and relinquished all ties with Culkin, Barrymore, the siamese twins that he picked up at T.G.I Fridays and Hollywood altogther. Television was no longer part of his life.

Gary layed low key for awhile and worked a warehouse job where he shipped clean needles to homeless shelters.

"It felt great to help out the needy," McDermott explained.

In the meantime he still played lots of ball hockey, waiting for the perfect moment to highlight his life and that is when an interesting offer came on the table. Cousin, Andrew Stevens, had been recruiting for a new season of the Shockers and the team was in dier need of some experience on the blue line not to mention some size to protect the front of the net. That is when he gave a call to big cousin, Gary. With no hesitation Gary jumped on board and immediately became a huge impact. His experience started to make its way in the play of the others and he is most likely responsible for a good part of their improvement over the past seasons.

Unfortunately, this past weekend Gary suffered an injury in another league and will be out for an undetermined amount of time. A stick reached up and bit him in the face so we will be resting at hope to recover. He will be out of the line-up for now but is looking forward to making a comeback. Gary has 4 goals and 8 assists in 23 games in the NABHL.

On behalf of the Shockers players, management and fans, we wish Gary a speedy recovery and hope to see him back in the line-up soon!

Blazing In Glory

Final Score
Blazers 8
Shockers 7 (OT)

Shockers took on some heavy contention the other night at the Rinque as they played the gritty Blazers. The Blazers who are off to one of their best starts in the NABHL going 5-0-1 thus far this season. On the other hand, the Shockers have been struggling to play a full game and find their way out of their zone continued to fight to find the fire that they displayed the first four games of the season.

The game started and the Shockers came out slack in the first period as they immediately went down 4-0.

"We shouldn't need to take the whole first period to warm-up, that's what the 5 minutes before the game is for," commented Donald Toohey, Shockers' leading point-getter (9G-17A).

After the first intermission the Shockers knew they had to regroup and get their crainiums out of their rectums. Low and behold, the boys with the 'S' on their chests hammered in three back-to-back goals. Steve Towell picked up his 14th coming from a pass from filler-inner, Andrew Johnson, who took over the duties of Gary McDermott who was a healthy scratch. A few minutes later, Toohey, blasted his 7th in the net, from Towell and Steve Diabo. A minute later, Chris Diabo lit the lamp for his 7th off a pass from Big Ben Ducharme. 1:20 later, the Blazers edged their way a bit further when Jon Zukran popped it over Giancarlo Capaz, who had looked a bit nervous between the pipes. But before the intermission, a powerplay goal by Chris DiSensi gave the Shockers a spark of hope and put them back within one. Towell and S. Diabo picking up the assists on DiSensi's goal.

Third period kicked off and Blazers were putting on the pressure and managed to bag themselves two goals back-to-back, including a weak shot from Ronnie Ohayon that found its way through the Wall of Capaz. Those two goals looked to take the wind out of the Shockers sails but a quick time-out to regroup and the Shockers started their infamous comeback. Donald Toohey bagged his second of the game from Andrew Stevens and DiSensi with two ticks under the 4:00 mark. 1:30 left in the game and Towell would add another to his tally from DiSensi and Stevens and then a whole 8 seconds later, the big brown bomber, Donald Toohey, would get his hat-trick goal and the game knotting goal.

"I think [Toohey's] cat shitty on his stuff brought him some good luck this game," laughed DiSensi.

"I hate that f**king cat!" added Toohey.

Off to shootouts where Shockers have always been pretty successful selected Toohey, Towell, and S. Diabo as their go-to guys, however, all three were stone-walled by opposing goaltender Daniel Gates and the Blazers bagged the win.

"We were are pretty lucky just to grab the one point," said Francois Hamelin.

"We got to start playing a full game. We ran into the same problem last game and its tough on us to keep catching up everytime," added Andrew Stevens.

Next game for the Shockers in Monday, April 13th @ 6:30pm against the Decepticons (5-2-1). The Shockers had pretty good games against the Decepticons in the past and were only beaten once but with both teams revamped it should make for an interesting game. Both the Shockers and Decepticons are fighting for second place in their respective divisions, and even the Shockers have a chance to move into first place depending on how FW fesses up against the Huskies this Sunday.

**NOTE: The schedule has been updated on the blog according to NABHL.com **

Towell Gets NABHL Honors

In positive news, the NABHL has selected the Shockers' own Steve Towell as Player of the Month for the Rockstar Division.

NABHL stated on their website:

"After a relatively mediocre season in the intermediate league last season, Steve Towell (6gp,13g,9a,22pts) is a big reason the Shockers have emerged as one of the stronger teams in Ball Hockey this season. Towell played a big role in big wins for the Shockers over the Purple Cobras and the Warriors. While the Shockers have dropped two straight, Towell is a major bright spot for this improving squad."

On behalf of all the Shockers players, fans and loyal blog readers, we would like to congratulate Steve on his accomplishment.

Keep up the good work!
