Final Score
Purple Cobras 6
Shockers 1
Last night hosted the last and final game for the Shockers in the NABHL as they took on the Purple Cobras in game two action. Before the game the league had threatened the Shockers by ending their playoffs aspirations if things got out of hand. Unfortunately for the Shockers, their fate would be decided by themselves.
The game was knotted up at 1-1 until the third period, the Shockers demise came as they almost played two full periods on the penalty kill. Steve Towell and Donald Toohey both got tossed for fighting, something the Shockers had stressed before the game to each player they had to stay away from. The team also suffered the loss of Chris Diabo during the third period as he picked up four minors throughout the game; most of which were poor judgement calls on the referee's part as the Cobras were constantly diving around the Rinque as if it were a high school swimming competition. Despite losing those three and Chris Di Sensi out serving a two-game suspension, the Shockers also suffered some borderline bogus calls but nothing out of the ordinary in terms of run-of-the-mill penalties. All-in-all, the Shockers were just too ridden with penalties and ended up paying the price in the end.
"It's hard to win games from the penalty box," commented the freight train, Jeff Jasmin, after the game.
Despite the Shockers having one of their best season in terms of their season record and scoring production, they also had one of their worst seasons for penalties and suspensions and once again, another disappointing outting in the playoffs.
Even though the Shockers end their winter season on a short note, they will have to pick up their socks and prepare for the upcoming summer season starting this tuesday, June 2 @ 7:30pm. Earlier this season, it had been decided by team management that the Shockers would be moving the roster to the nationally recognized PTM (Park Ex Division) league for at least the Summer '09 season. The reason for moving the team was based on playing more games for a lot less money than what they were getting at the NABHL. PTM, also offers certified referee's and a clean gameplay environment.
With the move, however, certain players will not be on the Summer '09 roster. Some of these names include the big 3, Steve Towell, Donald Toohey and Chris Di Sensi who will return to their summer team, The Fighting Irish, in the PTM (Pointe St-Charles Division). Gary McDermott is questionable to return however he has not ruled out coming back to the Shockers.
As every season comes and goes, we run through the awards of the best of the best Shockers, here's the list:
NHL-inspired Trophies:
Mo-Lester B. Person Trophy (best player when on the ground): Even though Francois was the reigning champion of this award, this year he was beat out than none other than Jeff Jasmin.
Frank Salloppe Trophy (defense who plays almost every position in one shift): Jeff took home this award last season but I think everyone can agree that Chris Diabo was really just all over the place.
Bill Masturbate Trophy (player who loves us so much to show up every game): There were 3 dudes in the running but just because he was able to balance a new born kid on a hockey stick, this season's winner is Marc Boucher. Let's face it, he was there an hour before each game anyways.
Balder Balls Trophy (player who wasn't on the team before and stuck it out all season): Due to suspensions we had to give it to the guy who was new and played the most games, give it up for Steve Towell.
Lady Bang Trophy (gentlemanly conduct especially in the corners): This season was a toss up with no real clear winner so the trophy will be shared by Chris Di Sensi and Donald Toohey.
Jack Ass Em' Award (coach of the year): We had a part-time coach this season and she did a good job when she was there...Brit Diabo.
Chuck Norris Trophy (defenceman who might kill someone with a shot): He took it last season and might as well have it again, Marc Boucher
Vagina Trophy (best goaltender): He was there for us the whole season, GC Capaz.
Fart Trophy (most valuable player): Since the points were tied at 39 points a piece, the two Steve's can enjoy this Pina Colata.
Blond Smith Trophy (most valuable player in the playoffs): He kept us in there until the end and made some huge saves especially in game two, Mr. Capaz takes home the award.
Shockers Trophies:
Two In The Goo Trophy (awarded to the player who is likely to smash someone's head into the glass): Donald Toohey
One in the Poo Trophy (awarded to the player with the most penalty minutes): Donald Toohey
Big Baller Trophy (awarded automatically to Steve Diabo): Steve Diabo
Shot Caller Trophy (awarded exclusively to Steve Diabo): Steve Diabo
Poltergeist Trophy (awarded to the player who has a skill to be invisible on and off the floor): Everyone showed up for the most part so we'll give it to Goppy Sandhu again.
Deep Throat Trophy (awarded to the player who is involved the most in team communications): Francois Hamelin
