Shockers need OT to settle against Vendetta

Final Score
Shockers 6
Vendetta 5 (OT)

Last night was one of the Shockers' shakiest games since maybe their debutant season at the Rinque; narrowly taking home the win in overtime against a team that they should have shown up to play.

Vendetta, despite being in the cellar of the standings, gave a good fight constantly nipping at the heels of the Shockers. On at least three or four of Vendetta's goals, the Shockers' defense might as well have been invisible as there were guys all alone in front of the net.

Vendetta took advantage of a shaky outing by Giancarlo Capaz, who had a couple of rattletrap moments during the game including a very dangerous challenge on a loose ball that hopped over his stick and almost into the net. Then there were other moments where he was left to hang when Vendetta attackers were all over rebounds that the Shockers couldn't get their sticks on. Even though Capaz looked not too happy with his performance after the game, he had to feel some sort of pride in the big saves late in the third and in overtime which, in the end, ended up being the turning point for the Shockers to get the win.

The offense for the Shockers was carried by the brothers Chris and Steve Diabo and the sour cream-filling of the native taco, Chris Millar as they accounted for four of the five regulation time goals. Chris Diabo slapping together a bukkake of highlight-reel moves featured some crazy shots on net including one from on top of the faceoff circle top shelf passed the Vendetta goalie that made him look like a statuette of "Red Light" Racicot. The other two lines, struggling to make an impact on the scoresheet, might face more mixing and matching according to captain, Andrew Stevens, "we're still trying to find a working combination to get us firing on all cylinders. We tried something new last night and it didn't work so it's back to the drawing board."

Despite the Shockers not getting too much action from the other offensive lines, there has been a handful of close calls, most notably is, Frankie Ortuso who has hit everything on the net except the mesh. Ortuso simply cannot buy a goal this season as he rang a one-timer off the post during last night's third period and has missed open nets by mere inches in other games. Once the slump is broken, watch for this guy's name to be plastered all over the scoresheet.

The Shockers' defense was exceptionly sleepy last night as there were several lapses in communication between the pairs which in turn led to Vendetta goals but Francois Hamelin does explain:

"We're figuring it out with each game. We just got to remind ourselves about the basics of hockey and we'll be solid."

Despite the breakdowns in the defensive zone from time to time, the defense team has been impressively partaking in some offensive work as well. Most notably last night was Greg "Lidstrom" Emmanuel, who, really did his nickname justice as he quarterbacked quite a few plays including two give-and-go's in one shift and really looked comfortable out on the blue lines. Despite sitting out for three straight seasons he has really made a impact-plenty comeback.

In the end, the Shockers were severely lucky to pull away with the win as they looked sluggish, unorganized and even lost the lead with 2:00 on the clock in the third. Chris Diabo fetched the knotting goal with a minute and some change and then Alain Godard put in the game winner in OT off a bad feed from Stevens just seconds after Capaz made a huge sprawling pad save.

Next week the Shockers will take on the first place Raging Bulls at 6:30pm.

Capaz and Diabo Shine in Shockers Shutout

Final Score
Shockers 3
Hellenic Republic of Park-X 0

Hellenic Republic of Park-X were seriously looking to put a ball in the net...any net for that matter as they were shutout last game against the Thundercats in week one. The Shockers coming off a huge 8-2 win in their PTM debut against the East Side Squad last week looked to keep the goals pouring in by the bucket loads.

Last night, making their first PTM's appearances were Greg "Lidstrom" Emmanuel and Steve "Big Baller, Shot Caller and for you and your friends it's BBSC" Diabo.

The BBSC was teamed up with kid-brother Chris "Kid-Crosby" who has been nothing but a goalie's nightmare and Chris "Millar Time" Millar, who has been an intimidating character as he has been scaring off the other teams with his muscles and recitals of lines from The Hulk. Despite, Chris Diabo dropped a deuce last night, BBSC was pretty silent in the goals department.

Lidstrom coupled up with veteran and former winner of the Mo-Lester B. Person award, Francois Hamelin. Lidstrom gave a valiant effort and played a fairly solid game where little got by...if anything.

The Shockers opened up the scoring short-handed when Kid-Crosby Diabo jammed on the brakes and laced a slapper in the back of the net. The goalie didn't have a chance to wet his pants let alone blink as the ball whipped by him faster than Taco Bell in a digestive tract.

The second goal was scored by Marc "The Claw" Boucher on the powerplay as the Shockers were dominating with pristine scoring chances. The Claw's howitzer boomed itself through traffic and past the goalie and he celebrated with a Captain Morgan-like arm in the air.

The third goal, and the nail in the coffin for the Republic, was Chris Diabo getting his second of the game as he blasted it off the faceoff top shelf. The goalie, once again, dumbfounded by the shot looked like a totem pole....see what I did there, I dropped in some Native American paraphranelia in a story about a Native dude...clever ain't it.

Up by three, it was all up to Giancarlo "Drunken Clam" Capaz to seal the deal and followed through with it. Capaz posting his first and hopefully not last shutout this season in a stellar performance against the Republics attempts at attacking the caged phenom.

The Shockers light up the stage next Tuesday against Vendetta who got pummeled against the Raging Bulls 8-0 in week one of the season. The Shockers should not let their guard down so easy against them as Vendetta will look to put on a stronger outting than the last one.

Shockers Impress PTM

On the PTM website, the Shockers were featured in a little write-up where they impressed the league with their first victory of the season.

"Les Shockers ont laissé une forte impression dans leur premier match en martelant le East Side Squad 8 à 2. Chris Diabo a marqué la moitié de leurs buts tandis que Andrew Stevens a réussi un doublé. Benoît Ducharme et Alain Godard ont complété la mise. Est-ce que les Shockers sont la meilleure formation de la division?"

A little premature to be questioning if the Shockers are the best in the division but only time will tell.

Shockers Take Season Opener

Final Score
Shockers 8
East Side Squad 2

The Shockers were a bit skeptical about how they would be able to perform on a much larger surface than the Rinque but did not seem to lose a step during last night's game against the East Side Squad in their PTM debut.

Chris Diabo led the charge with a 4-goal dominance, making the defense look like pylons on most of his goals. Ben Ducharme had a 2-goal game to pop his PTM cherry as his line-mates Alain Godard and Andrew Stevens each grabbed a goal for the road. Two road goals to-go and we're Shockers so we can't pay for them!

Giancarlo Capaz, desipte having about 4 shots the whole game let in two goals that were shelved on him from the slot. The Drunken Clam was still content with his performance and the performance of his team.

"I played great. You played great. WE ALL PLAYED GREAT!" exclaimed Capaz after the game in his drunken rage.

The Shockers will be challenged next week as they will face Hellenic Republic of Park-X on Tuesday, June 9th @ 9:30pm. Look for a familiar face who will be making a jurassic comeback, Greg "Glory Hole" Emmanuel, will be suiting up in the 2-in-the-pink-1-in-the-stink for his first game in over three seasons. He was a healthy scratch for last night's game where the line-up was filled in by the Green Giant himself, Gary McDermott.

Also projected to make his season return is Steve "Big Baller, Shot Caller" Diabo who sat out last night's game after he suffered a knee injury in game two against the Purple Cobra's in the winter '09 season. He was the head coach for the Shockers last night and kept everything running smooth behind the bench despite not having his ice chips and fedora hat. To cover up the void, nobleman, Jon "Rotten Guch" Sante, filled in the BBSC shoes for the night.

Catch the Shockers in game two of the summer season next Tuesday and check back for the game recap right here on the blog!

Shockers Eliminated

Final Score
Purple Cobras 6
Shockers 1

Last night hosted the last and final game for the Shockers in the NABHL as they took on the Purple Cobras in game two action. Before the game the league had threatened the Shockers by ending their playoffs aspirations if things got out of hand. Unfortunately for the Shockers, their fate would be decided by themselves.

The game was knotted up at 1-1 until the third period, the Shockers demise came as they almost played two full periods on the penalty kill. Steve Towell and Donald Toohey both got tossed for fighting, something the Shockers had stressed before the game to each player they had to stay away from. The team also suffered the loss of Chris Diabo during the third period as he picked up four minors throughout the game; most of which were poor judgement calls on the referee's part as the Cobras were constantly diving around the Rinque as if it were a high school swimming competition. Despite losing those three and Chris Di Sensi out serving a two-game suspension, the Shockers also suffered some borderline bogus calls but nothing out of the ordinary in terms of run-of-the-mill penalties. All-in-all, the Shockers were just too ridden with penalties and ended up paying the price in the end.

"It's hard to win games from the penalty box," commented the freight train, Jeff Jasmin, after the game.

Despite the Shockers having one of their best season in terms of their season record and scoring production, they also had one of their worst seasons for penalties and suspensions and once again, another disappointing outting in the playoffs.

Even though the Shockers end their winter season on a short note, they will have to pick up their socks and prepare for the upcoming summer season starting this tuesday, June 2 @ 7:30pm. Earlier this season, it had been decided by team management that the Shockers would be moving the roster to the nationally recognized PTM (Park Ex Division) league for at least the Summer '09 season. The reason for moving the team was based on playing more games for a lot less money than what they were getting at the NABHL. PTM, also offers certified referee's and a clean gameplay environment.

With the move, however, certain players will not be on the Summer '09 roster. Some of these names include the big 3, Steve Towell, Donald Toohey and Chris Di Sensi who will return to their summer team, The Fighting Irish, in the PTM (Pointe St-Charles Division). Gary McDermott is questionable to return however he has not ruled out coming back to the Shockers.

As every season comes and goes, we run through the awards of the best of the best Shockers, here's the list:

NHL-inspired Trophies:

Mo-Lester B. Person Trophy (best player when on the ground): Even though Francois was the reigning champion of this award, this year he was beat out than none other than Jeff Jasmin.
Frank Salloppe Trophy (defense who plays almost every position in one shift): Jeff took home this award last season but I think everyone can agree that Chris Diabo was really just all over the place.
Bill Masturbate Trophy (player who loves us so much to show up every game): There were 3 dudes in the running but just because he was able to balance a new born kid on a hockey stick, this season's winner is Marc Boucher. Let's face it, he was there an hour before each game anyways.
Balder Balls Trophy (player who wasn't on the team before and stuck it out all season): Due to suspensions we had to give it to the guy who was new and played the most games, give it up for Steve Towell.
Lady Bang Trophy (gentlemanly conduct especially in the corners): This season was a toss up with no real clear winner so the trophy will be shared by Chris Di Sensi and Donald Toohey.
Jack Ass Em' Award (coach of the year): We had a part-time coach this season and she did a good job when she was there...Brit Diabo.
Chuck Norris Trophy (defenceman who might kill someone with a shot): He took it last season and might as well have it again, Marc Boucher
Vagina Trophy (best goaltender): He was there for us the whole season, GC Capaz.
Fart Trophy (most valuable player): Since the points were tied at 39 points a piece, the two Steve's can enjoy this Pina Colata.
Blond Smith Trophy (most valuable player in the playoffs): He kept us in there until the end and made some huge saves especially in game two, Mr. Capaz takes home the award.

Shockers Trophies:

Two In The Goo Trophy (awarded to the player who is likely to smash someone's head into the glass): Donald Toohey
One in the Poo Trophy (awarded to the player with the most penalty minutes): Donald Toohey
Big Baller Trophy (awarded automatically to Steve Diabo): Steve Diabo
Shot Caller Trophy (awarded exclusively to Steve Diabo): Steve Diabo
Poltergeist Trophy (awarded to the player who has a skill to be invisible on and off the floor): Everyone showed up for the most part so we'll give it to Goppy Sandhu again.
Deep Throat Trophy (awarded to the player who is involved the most in team communications): Francois Hamelin
